“PawPrints” – Furry Senpai’s Comic Pulls for June 20, 2012

June 23, 2012 1 comment

Hi everyone,

Here’s a recap of my pickups for this week: Birds of Prey #10, Glory #27, and Astonishing X-Men #51 .  Remember, my rating does not necessarily reflect the comic’s quality (although that is taken into consideration) but rather it’s a gauge of my overall interest in the story being told.

5 = Excellent thus far, and will definitely pick up the next issue if/when available.

4 = Pretty good, the series has got my complete interest. Recommend staying with this series.

3 = If I see the next issue on shelves, I might give it  thumb-through. I’m Mildly interested.

2 = Has some good points but I didn’t find the story too interesting/I feel nothing for the characters.

1 = I wasted my money!

0 = I will BURN every copy I find!!!

Also, I am always careful to avoid spoilers as much as possible.

So let’s get to it!

Birds of Prey #10

Plenty of action in this issue, but not much else. Here the Birds of Prey are deep in the Amazon, fighting plant monsters, as they continue their quest to rejuvenate their fallen comrade, Poison Ivy. There’s nothing really wrong with this book, but it feels like TPB filler. Oh, and Black Canary can fly over short distances using her Sonic Scream. I didn’t know she could do that… Read more…

“PawPrints” – Furry Senpai’s Comic Pulls for May 23

Hi everyone,

Here’s a recap of my pickups for this week: Prophet #25, MIND MGMT #1, and Youngblood #71.  Remember, my rating does not necessarily reflect the comic’s quality (although that is taken into consideration) but rather it’s a gauge of my overall interest in the story being told.

Prophet #25

I really want to like this comic, I really do. However, and I will sound like a broken-record here, I still have no idea what is going on. This is pretty bad when you recall that I’m the one who defended and can make sense of the Ultimate Warrior comics. Read more…

New Section! “PawPrints”

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking about reviewing current comic books on my blog for some time. However I’ve never gotten around to doing it. The reason  for this largely that I feel like I cannot adequately judge a comic’s quality based on just one issue.

So, instead, what I’ve decided to do is regularly run down my most recent pickups with my immediate thoughts about them. I will also rate each comic from 1 to 5.

The rating will NOT necessarily reflect the whole comic’s quality, but rather my interest in picking up the next issue.

So without further ado, here’s my “PawPrints” for the week of  4/18/12:

Micro Series: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Leonardo #4

Review: Chakan the Forever Man #1

September 29, 2011 Leave a comment

Hi everyone!

The other day I was at the comic store and was asked by another patron what I’m currently reading. I told him that I’ve been loving Rachel Rising (review coming VERY soon) and been enjoying the mindless fun of the current Duke Nukem Glorious Bastard comics. After describing what Rachel Rising was, he recommended some Marvel titles to me, to which I replied that I simply was not interested.

It’s not that I hate Marvel comics, on the contrary I’m a HUGE Punisher and Nightcrawler (is he still dead?) fan. My problem with Marvel is its fragmented storytelling, which is nothing new. I’m a firm believer in keeping it simple, and gradually developing the story towards some goal. Granted, that kind of focused story-telling is nearly impossible in the vast Marvel universe, and it’s an issue the industry has attempted to tackle through numerous reboots and spinoffs that have just resulted in more consumer confusion.

Also, I have a strong distaste for the “over produced” look of many current comics. I’m not saying they’re “ugly,” but when I see some of these current-gen comics with all sorts of fancy computer-generated colors and shapes, it produces a kind of visual over-saturation. In other words, if everything is made to look so incredibly eye-popping, nothing really sticks out, which culminates in a rather bland visual experience. The simplest remedy to this is rather old-school: carefully detailed black and white art.
This is a large part of the reason why I hold Chakan the Forever Man in such high regard.

Chakan: The Forever Man (Sega Genesis) – Review

September 5, 2011 5 comments

Several months ago I purchased Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for the 360 and was pleasantly impressed with the included titles. Kid Chameleon, Comix Zone, and numerous other titles from my childhood, but one title seemed to be forgotten…

And I can happily say that this game (and comic, more on that in a future review) has withstood the test of time and is very much an unsung classic. I will warn you now, this review has plenty of spoilers, but to adequately explain why I love this game and character so much, I need to talk about the game in detail. By giving things away, I don’t think it will necessarily ruin the experience for a new player, but rather help clarify why this game was so original and fun to play.

Also the game has been out for nearly two decades, if you haven’t played it yet, do it. Read more…

In Defense of… WARRIOR

March 27, 2011 4 comments

As promised,  here’s my surprise. I will be talking about my memories with the infamous WARRIOR comic books and why I enjoy them so much.

I was debating whether or not to also talk about the WWF comic books about the Ultimate Warrior but those are really not nearly as “entertaining” as those from the man himself.

Now for those that don’t know, the Ultimate Warrior was one of the most popular champions of the World Wrestling Federation in the 90s. Aside from his use of steroids in the early 90s he has kept a pretty clean record (especially when compared to other wrestlers…HOKOGAN) and has done pretty well for himself. However he has always carried the reputation of being well… batshit insane. Read more…
