    Dear Furry Senpai,
I heard that there was a new Evangelion out! And that there’s even a special edition boxed set of this show now available. Have you watched it? What do you think (being a connoisseur of such a fine anime, that is!)? Will Senpai Magazine be doing anything with this remake of the show?

Yeah, they have “reimagined” Neon Genesis into four new movies. I have the first one, “You Are (Not) Alone” and really liked it, although they clipped out one of my favorite moments in the entire series – Shinji and Kensuke’s campout.

In the fourth episode “Hedgehog’s Dilemma” (my second favorite episode) Shinji runs away for obvious reasons. He bumps into Kensuke who’s LARPing out a military scenario in the woods, and they have a heart-to-heart. I really liked this scene for it gives us a rare glimpse into the character of Kensuke who should play a much bigger role in the series than he does. Also the themes of loneliness and isolation in this episode really spoke to me all those years ago when I first saw it as an angsty young teen.

Sadly this entire bit was cut out in the first movie… *sigh* But they at least introduced Kaworu, much earlier than the original series. Coincidentally, his episode is my favorite episode of the whole series.

Funimation is taking their sweet time releasing the movies on dvd. The second one, “You can (not) advance” has been out in Japan for several months, but its American release is scheduled for April 4th (although I’m going to try to get it for the 29th). I have been avoiding all news, trailers, and spoilers about these movies like the plague, because I want to go into them knowing as little as possible. Hopefully then I can recreate the experience I had with the series the first time around.

Granted, I could watch them subbed before they are released on dvd, but I prefer watching anime like that dubbed when I can. Each scene is packed with so much detail, and I feel like I could pay attention to every little nuance much better if my eyes are not constantly bouncing around between the captions on the bottom of the screen and back up to what’s going on.
Also I have a ps3 and want to see it in blue-ray glory.

I HATE to review anything that’s not finished for obvious reasons, especially if it’s an anime like Neon Genesis what with all of its twists, turns and surprises. So I refuse to even think about touching a review on any of these movies until I have seen all four.

Even then, I will be hesitant. Sure I liked anime as a kid, but that passion grew when I was a teen thanks in large part to Neon Genesis. I know it might sound cheesy, but it played such a major role in my life and I want to do all I can to do it justice.

Oh, and it should be noted that I do have a tendency to ramble when it comes to covering things I really enjoy such as this. So if I ever decide to touch NGE, I know our editor will just love me for it.
